Kershaw, the Snake Charmer, Strikes out 11 D-Backs

Dodgers  4 8 0
D-Backs 3 7 1
WP- Kershaw (5-3)
LP- Saunders (0-5)
S- Jansen (1)
HR- Big Rod (7)

15 D-Backs whiffed as the Dodgers hung on to win game 1 after Guerrier and Padilla almost blew the game in the 8th and 9th innings.

Aaron Miles was atrocious in the field tonight. In the first inning after Young led off with a double, Melvin doubles to right field when Miles collides into Loney and both fall down without ball in glove. Luckily Kershaw gets out of the jam after striking out both Nady and Drew, and getting Upton to pop out.

Kershaw has a nice 1-2-3 inning in the second. In the bottom of the second it's a groundball party as Kemp, Uribe and Loney all ground out going down 1-2-3.

Kershaw gets out of another jam in the third after he gives up a leadoff walk to the pitcher Saunders. Then Young singles on a pop fly that once again Miles can't get to behind Loney. Kersh whiffs Mora, but then walks Nady to load the bases. Stephen Drew, who had a horrendous night, strikes out again, and Upton flies out to end the threat.

Kershaw fans four more snakes in the 4th & 5th innings. In the bottom of the 5th, the Dodgers get on the board after Big Rod hits his weekly homerun, a solo shot, making it 1-0.

The Dodgers would add to their lead in the 6th when Carroll, the Singles Machine, leads off with a base hit, Miles gets a lucky flare single allowing Carroll to advance to third. Kemp then narrowly misses hitting one out and doubles off the wall scoring Carroll making it 2-0.

Kersh strikes out 2 more D-Backs in the 7th and has another 1-2-3 inning. The Diamondbacks have a bumbling 7th after Carroll walks, Miles singles to Drew who throws to nobody drawing an error allowing Carroll to score and Miles goes to 3rd, 3-0. Paterson comes in to relieve Saunders, and Ethier singles in Miles, 4-0, when once again Drew can't make the play. Vasquez then comes in to relieve Paterson and Kemp promptly gets a little roller single up the 3rd baseline, but then Uribe pops out to end the shenanigans.

Saunders makes 106 pitches, going 6.2 innings, allowing 6 hits, 3 runs, 4 walks, and only 2 strikeouts.

Kershaw also makes 106 pitches, going 7 innings, allowing 0 runs, 2 walks, and striking out 11.

Guerrier comes in to pitch the 8th inning for the Dodgers, and strikes out Miranda, but allows a single to Young who steals second. Nady then singles him in putting the D-Backs on the board, 4-1. Drew then strikes out again for the third time. Gutierrez comes in and shuts down the Dodgers 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 8th.

The 9th inning got sketchy, and we all could see a bullpen meltdown coming. Vicente Padilla comes in and makes 32 pitches. He gives up a leadoff walk to Upton, Johnson singles, Parra's grounder advances the runners to 2nd & 3rd, Montero gets a flare single which scores both Upton and Johnson. Just like that it's 4-3. Padilla strikes out Branyan, but then walks Young. Luckily Donnie pulls him out in time, and brings in Kenley Jansen for the last out. Jansen strikes out Mora to pick up his first save of the season.

Kershaw gets his 5th win, and Saunders falls to 0-5. Stephen Drew went 0 for 4 with 3 strikeouts and an error. Andre Ethier reached safely in his 36th consecutive game.

Tomorrow we will be posting live from Dodger Stadium as Chad Billingsley goes to the mound. Game time at 4:10pm. Can't wait to eat a Dodger Dog!!
