All-star outfielder Andre Ethier, hits the first of his two homeruns in sundays 4-1 Dodger win

If I had told you that Ted Lilly would only give up 1 run, and the bullpen would alow no runs, what would you have thought the score would be? I think this is a result everyone would have taken ten times out of ten. the Dodgers for the first time this year, sweep a series, and win their fourth in a row. they beat the Padres 4-1 to go into the allstar break on a hot streak!

Ted Lilly went 5 effective innings, and Allstar Andre Ethier hit two homeruns, as the Dodgers hop over San Diego in the standings to go back into fourth place, and will not be in last place at the all-star break.

Lilly was effective today through 5 innings, allowing just 1 run

just the fact that weve won four in a row, is something to celebrate!

heres the highlights......

Lilly retires the Padres in order in the first inning, striking out Headly. the scoreless streak continues.....

the Dodgers almost scored in the first inning, but were thrown out of the inning, litterally.
Tony Gywnn leads off with an infield single. a little dribbler to the mound that he beats out by a step.
gwynn steals second, and Furcal sacrifices him to third. after Ethier grounds out back to the box, Stauffer throws a wild pitch, it rolls away from Padres catcher Rob Johnson, but Johnson recovers, and is able to throw Gwynn out at home plate. the pitcher Stauffer covered and made the tag on gwynn.

the Padres would get a Hudson single in the second inning, but thats it. the scoreless streak goes on......

in the bottom of the second inning, the Dodgers almost score again, but dont. after Kemp and Loney ground out, Uribe walks, and last night's hero, fatty Navarro doubles into the gap in right center, the ball bounces over the wall, and its a ground rule double. Uribe is forced back to third. the Pads walks Miles, to get to Lilly, and he grounds out to end the frame.

the Dodgers scoreless streak would come to an end in the top of the third. in ironic fashion it comes to an end because of a Lilly homerun. hey you didnt really think Lilly would pitch a shutout did you? no of coarse notm, but Lilly only allowing 1 run is like a shutout in a way.
Catcher Rob johnson, the owner of a buck 80 batting avg, takes Lilly deep into the left field bleachers for his third homerun of the year. 1-0 Padres.
the pitcher Stauffer lines out to Uribe, nearly taking off his head.  Denorfia sngles, and we fear the worst, but Lilly settled down and limited the damage. Gonzalez struck out, while denorfia stole second, headly walked, and Ludwick grounds into a force out.

the Dodgers would come back to score two runs in the bottom of the third, on three walks, two fielder's choice, and a  throwing Error, but no hit.
Gwynn, Furcal and Ethier all walk, to load the bases with nobody out for Kemp.  its a Stauffer walkapalooza! Stauffer walked 5 in 6 innings.
Kemp hits a sharp liner to third, that Headly makes a nice diving stop, but trys to throw from one knee to get Gwynn at the plate, his throw is wide, and goes to the backstop, gwynn and Furcal both score on the error, and its 2-1 Dodgers! :)
originally it was ruled an RBI fielder's choice for kemp, but was later changed to a hit.
the Dodgers have Stauffer on the ropes!
Loney's groundball fielder's choice sees Ethier being thrown out at the plate. Dre, tried to slide around and do something sneaky, but was tagged out. (he would make up for it later). Uribe pathetically grounds into a double play.

Tony Gwynn scores, Catcher Rob Johnson tries to recieve an errant thrown from Headly

Lilly, strikes out maybin, Hudson, and Stauffer in the fourth inning, working around a Rizzo pop fly single, and a walk.

the Dodgers go down 123 in the 4th inning, and the Padres go down 123 in the 5th inning.

in the bottom of the 5th inning, Andre Ethier slugs his 8th homerun of the year to right field. 3-1 Dodgers!
its the Dodgers first homerun since june 28, when Miles hit his first homer. thats a stretch of ten games

in the top of the 6th inning, Jansen relieves Lilly, and has a 123 inning, striking out two Padres.

Lilly goes 5 allowing only 1 walking two and striking out 7. he comes out in line for the win.

the Dodger bullpen was spectacular. they completly shut down the Padres bats.

move to the top of the 7th, Jansen still in, strikes out Rizzo, then walks Johnson. Donnie brings a hook, and brings in Kuo to pitch to pinch hitter Kyle Phillips. Phillips is called back, and Guzman hits for him instead. Kuo gets him on a fly ball to Dre. Guerrier is brought in to finish the inning, and gets Denorfia to fly out. still 3-1 Dodgers

with Frieri relieving Stauffer in the 7th inning, Miles doubles. with oeltjen hitting for Guerrier, Miles is picked off second base by catcher Rob Johnson. Oeltjen then whiffs. Gwynn flies out.

Miles connects for a double in the 8th

move to the top of the 8th. Dougie on the mound, retires Gonzalez on a fly ball, but Headly doubles. in trouble, Dougie impresses by striking out Ludwick, and getting Maybin to ground out.

with rookie Spence pitching for San Diego in the bottom of the 8th inning, Andre Ethier hits his second homerun of the game, a bomb into the right field bleachers. this is Ethier's first two home run game, since last may, and Im guessing hes feeling excited about playing in the allstar game in his home town.

Chad Qualls comes in and retires Kemp and Loney to end the 8th.

move to the top of the 9th. Mattingly took a page out of Joe Torre's book of pitching staff management, and used 5 relief pitchers to secure the win.

Javy (ice man) Guerra came in to close shop in the 9th. after his bases loaded none out save the other night, Im convinced hes got ice in his veins. Guerra would give us a heart attack again, before nailing it down.
Hudson leads off with a ground ball single to left, and Rizzo walks , putting runners at first and second with none out. Johnson flies out to Dre, Venable pinch hitting, strikes out, and Denorfia pops out to end the game. there it is!!!! the Dodgers sweep the Padres, and go into the break with a four game winning streak, now out of the cellar! the Dodgers finish the first half with a 41-51 record.

Guerra picks up another save, Navarro congratulates

Ted Lilly picks up the win, Guerra his fourth save, and Ethier a game ball.

while our three stars, Kemp, Ethier, and Kershaw, are playing in the all-star game, the rest of the Dodgers will fly to pheonix on thursday and prepare for their game on friday night, as the all-star game is also in Pheonix this year. Don Mattingly has announced his rotation for the second half, it will be Kershaw, Kuroda, Lily, then Bills, De La rosa, this ensures, Lilly doesnt pitch in the Giants series, and Kershaw will start the third game of that series on wed. july 20th.

and with that we will leave you. definatly on a good note. heres hoping the Dodgers have a better second half, and start winning some games, this is a good start.  sweeeeeeeeeep of the Padres! yesssssss! I love it!

once again we want to thank anyone and everyone who has read our blog. we will be back after the all-star break. watch Kemp in the homerun derby tomorrow, and the all-star game tuesday night.
