The Dodgers lost to the Astros 7-4 sunday as the Astros split the four game series with the Dodgers in the final meeting between the two teams at the juice box.
Monasterios was again horrible in another spot start filling in for the injured Padilla. as I said before it was likly he would not get past the fourth inning, and he was even worse not making it out of the second inning.
Monasterios lasted just 1.1 innings allowing 4 runs off 5 hits, three earned, walking two and striking out two. Monasterios is now 2-6 as a starter and is clearly a better pitcher out of the bullpen. Have you finally seen enough Joe? the Dodgers shot themselves in the foot as they pushed Kershaw back to tuesday so Ely could start on saturday, and then when Padilla went down again they had no one else to start except Monasterios.
Monasterios in the first with 1 out allowed a single then a two run home run to Hunter Pence, then single, throwing error by Hu, then a two run single by Wallace, and the astros were up 4-0.
Monasterios was taken out in the second inning and the Dodgers used four relief pitchers the rest of the game, and as I predicted earlier I knew one of them would give up some runs.
astros starter Nelson Figueroa shut out the dodgers for the first three innings, but allowed them to tie the game in the 4th.
Oeltjen singles, and then after a walk to Theriot Gibbons slams another monster home run to right, his 5th with the dodgers the score was 4-3. then Loney triples into the gap, and scores on a Russ Mitchell fly ball. tie game 4-4.
as usual the dodger bullpen would fail again. troncoso who was lucky enough to get through 1 inning, was allowed to pitch a second inning of relief for some reason. in the 5th he allowed three doubles as the Astros retook the lead 6-4. doubles to Wallace Castro and Blum score two.
John Lindsey finally picked up his first major league hit in the 5th inning with a bloop single to left. but he was left stranded along with the bases loaded as Gibbons flied out to left.
Carlos lee hit a solo home run off of the worst relief pitcher in Baseball, Octavio Dotel in the 8th to extend the Astros lead to 7-4.
houston would use 6 relief pitchers to shut down the Dodgers as Brandon Lyon came in to pitch a scoreless 9th picking up his 15th save of the season.
The Dodgers now head to San Francisco for a three game series in their final meeting with the hated Giants. the pitching matchup will be Kershaw vs. Zito
the Rockies beat Arizona today 4-2 winning their 10th straight game, and moving to within 1 and a half games of first. the giants are on their way to beat the Padres in SD. so the Pads and Giants will be tied for first with the Rockies a game and a half back, and the Dodgers looking to play spoiler and knock the Giants out of the playoffs. off day tomorrow, see everyone on wed! So the Dodgers fresh off of their two game winning streak, looking to take three out of four, in the final game at the juice box.
first off all dont expect them to ya know win today. not because of the lineup. dont get me wrong here the lineup is ugly, I mean when the last three spots of the lineup are Hu, Ausmus, Pitcher, lets just say you wont be scoring many runs lol. but its not the lineup that will beat them today, its the monasterios effect. Monasterios gets another spot start today filling in for Padilla once again who has reinjured hi neck. now its not the whole thing of starting monasterios, Im fine with that, even though hes much better as a relief pitcher that he is a starter.
Its the whole stupid Torre limiting strategy, that Monasterios can only make 75 pitches.
yeah so expect him to get yanked around the 4th inning. then of coarse you know what that means....basically a whole game of seeing the bullpen....ugggghhhh glug. dont let yesterdays performance fool you into thinking the bullpen is good. remember since Kuo and Jansen pitched yesterday, dont expect to see them again today, especially on a getaway day. that means we will be seeing the dredges of the bullpen, you know the worst relief pitchers pitchers in the National League....Sherrill, Belisario, Dotel....glug makes me want to puke. Torre must be loving it though, cause he gets to do what He loves to do best, using his entire bullpen, and sending out inferior relief pitcher after inferior relief pitcher. let batting practice commence!!!
on a great note, this will be the last game outside the NL west, and the last game we will be forced to listen to the two idiots on prime ticket. its Vinny the rest of the way!
and speaking of the rest of the way, Stacie and I will be here with you the rest of the way as well! lets play ball!

Wild 9th Give Dodgers Win in Houston

The train was silent in Minute Maid park Saturday night, as the Dodgers won their 2nd in a row in Houston. Joe Torre was ejected in the first inning after arguing strikes and balls when Casey Blake struck out looking. Don Mattingly took over managerial duties, and somehow managed not to do a double take when visiting the mound this time.
John Ely looked a bit nervous in the first inning, probably due to the fact that this was his first game since July. Ely gave up a leadoff walk to Bourn, and then when Keppinger singled the next at bat, Jay Gibbons threw a strike at Casey Blake to tag Bourn trying for third base. They get out of the inning with a double play. In the fourth inning Blake blasts his 15th homerun of the season giving the Dodgers a 1-0 lead. Gibbons singles, and Reed Johnson singles scoring Gibbons. Johnson then proceeds to make a delayed steal! A.J. Ellis singles home Johnson giving the Dodgers a 3-0 lead.
The Astros strike back in the bottom of the inning when Bourn hits a ball into the same area of the outfield where Gibbons had two balls hit to him the night before. He caught one of them last night, but this one he couldn't snag. Bourn trips and falls inbetween 2nd and 3rd, and Kemp's slow response in getting the ball back into the infield allows Bourn to make it to 3rd with a triple. Keppinger then singles home Bourn making it 3-1 Dodgers.
The Astros strike again in the bottom of the 5th when Wallace hits his second homerun, a solo shot. Sanchez then singles, Castro singles, Rodriguez bunts over both runners, and Bourn's ground ball scores a run tying the game at 3-3. Ely goes 6 innings, with 3 ERs, 4 strikeouts, and 1 BB. Rodriguez goes 7 innings, with 3 ERs, striking out 10 and 3 BBs.
Mattingly brings in George Sherrill to pitch the bottom of the 7th inning. He gets his first batter, Wallace, then they stupidly leave him in to face Sanchez, a righty. Well lo and behold, Sanchez hits a double. Luckily they get the hook and bring in Belisario who gets 2 outs including a strikeout to end the inning. Kenley Jansen pitches a perfect 8th inning and later would pick up his first save as a Dodger.
Brandon Lyon comes into pitch the 9th inning for the Astros, and this is where it gets wild. Trent Oeltjen leads off with a walk. Reed Johnson bunts along the 1B line and Wallace picks up the ball thinking it had rolled foul when in fact it was still on the line and fair. Both runners are safe. Ellis then goes for another bunt which goes between the pitcher's mound and third base. Blum doesn't charge for the ball, and Lyon picks it up and throws it away into right field allowing Oeltjen to score. Pence then throws the ball away a second time allowing Johnson to score. The Astros bring in Byrdak who gives up a pinch hit double to Loney scoring Ellis. Kuo pitches a great bottom of the ninth to secure his 9th save and a win for the Dodgers.
The Dodgers announced that Vicente Padilla would not be starting tomorrow due to a bulging disc in his neck again. It looks like he may be out for the rest of the year. Monasterios will be starting tomorrow morning in his place. The Dodgers look to take 3 of 4 in Houston and the series win tomorrow. Go Blue:)

I'm still in awe over the miraculous win the Dodgers had last night in extra innings. They snapped their 6 game losing streak, and finally scored more than 2 runs. Now Dotel's scoreless outing cannot overshadow his usual horridness, so for now I still will feel my stomach churning every time Torre brings him in. Jay Gibbons' awesome catch and 2 run homer looks like it earned him a spot in today's starting lineup over Pod. Me likes. Gibbons is a much better outfielder and hitter than Pod in my opinion. Reed Johnson gets the start in right field over Ethier.

The other story comes from young righty John Ely who will be making his first start since July 10th in which he gave up 6 ERs and was quickly sent packing back to AAA. Ely made his MLB debut on April 28th of this this year. He has pitched in 14 games, 79.2 innings, and made 59 strikeouts. Ely was impressive in his first seven starts with a record of 3-2 and a 2.54 ERA, but went 1-5 with a 7.49 ERA in his next seven. There's no question that Ely has great potential, and contributed greatly to the Dodgers as a fifth starter when they didn't have anyone. It's too bad the Dodgers gave up on him so quickly, but I'm happy to see him get another shot. I had the opportunity to see him pitch at Dodger Stadium May 22nd vs. Detroit. Ely will have to battle against Wandy Rodriguez who has had as been impressive in his last 14 starts, pitching six innings or longer in each one, going 8-2 with a 1.91 ERA, with 19 walks and 92 strikeouts in 94 1/3 innings. The Dodgers beat Rodriguez back on May 17, tallying four runs in his 6 2/3 innings. The winning pitcher on that night was...John Ely!
Watch for Ryan Theriot who has had success against Rodriguez. He has hit 4 doubles and a homerun in 29 appearances, hitting .370 vs. Rodriguez.

Gibbons slams go ahead homer, worst pitcher in ML gets the win

The Dodgers finally won a game! dont worry the apocolypse hasnt begun, although we did witness something extremly rare that we thought might only be possible with divine intervention! a dodger raod win!
the Dodgers finally won a game and snapped their 6 game losing streak, beating the astros 4-2 in 11 innings. it was the dodgers 70th win of the season.
the game was a scoreless pitchers duel between Kuroda and J.A. Happ, until the top of the 5th.
after stranding about 1000 men on base the dodgers finally broke through. after big rod singles and is sacrificed over to second. with two outs, Carroll singles to right, scoring Big Rod, and the dodgers go up 1-0
in a most aggravating fashion the astros came right back to tie in the bottom of the 5th.
sanchez and Wallace single with 1 out. then Bourne singles home Sanchez over the drawn in infield.
The Dodgers retook the lead, in the top of the 6th. Kemp tripled with no one on, thanks to Hunter Pence mislaying the ball in right. then Jay Gibbons pinch hitting for Reed Johnson, singled into left plating Kemp and the dodgers go back up 2-1.
J.A. Happ pitched 5 innings allowed 2 runs and was not involved in the decision.
The astros would come back again and tie in the bottom of the 7th.
these types of games are a perfect example of why I hate Joe Torre and consider him to be a horrible manager. He continues to think that his bullpen is better than his starters.
Once again Hiroki Kuroda pitched excellent. I should say more about him, as he goes 6 innings allowing only 1 run on 4 hits 2 walks and 3 strikeouts. he left up 2-1 in the 7th inning. was there any reason to take out Kuroda when he was pitching so well? knowing full well the Dodgers bullpen is one of the worst in the league? theres Torre for you. and of coarse the Dodgers bullpen blew another lead and made sure once again that Kuroda got screwed out of a win again!
Bellisario began the inning and after 1 out....DOUBLE. then here comes Torre to bring in guess who....george Sherrill to face a righty first. then a lefty. he suprisingly retired the righty Blum, but with 2 outs, yup Bourne the lefty groundball SINGLE, run scores tied at 2.
the game would remain tied all the way until the 11 th inning. but lets go to the bottom of the 10th first because thats where things got sketchy.....
Torre brings in the absolute worst pitcher in the ML, Octavio Dotel who clearly has no buisness pitching in the majors in any way whatsoever. but despite Dotel's best effort to blow another game, the Dodgers got lucky and a nice defensive play by Jay Gibbons.
with 1 out, Wallace hit a long fly ball to deep left center Gibbons going all the way back to the wall made a very nice catch. next batter Bourne hits a another long fly ball to the exact same spot. this time Gibbons couldnt catch it and Bourne wound up at third with a triple.
now its a tie game bottom 10th. the astros have a runner at third with 1 out, drawn in infield, and the worst pitcher in the universe on the mound for the Dodgers, so not looking good, however to everyone's shock, and I do mean utter shock Dotel pitched out of the jam, as he struck out Keppinger and Pence to end the inning.
in the top of the 11th, Kemp Singled and the Gibbons was the hero again, slamming a monster home run to right field, his 4th of the season, and making us very happily forget that a man named garret anderson ever existed.
Dotel pitched a scoreless bottom of the 11th as the dodgers finally win on the road 4-2. Dotel gets the win, and gibbons goes 2 for 3 driving in 3 runs. Big Rod also had a very good game going 3for 4 with a run scored.
all in all a much better showing from the offense. I mean I dont think I need to tell you that when the dodgers score more than 3 runs in a game, its like watching a perfect game, you just never know when you will ever see it happen again!
Ely starts tomorrow for the dodgers, which is a nice story as no one should forget about his contributions to the team early in the year. Im sure Stac will say something about his efforts.

no matter who the Dodegrs put in the lineup or which way Torre mixes it up, it still sucks.
this team sucks no doubt. Im pretty sure they will lose every game on this road trip. and is there a reason that POD has to play every single game? not like it matters though. and no lindsey in the lineup, but Russ Mitchell gets another start this time at first base.

no matter who the Dodegrs put in the lineup or which way Torre mixes it up, it still sucks.
this team sucks no doubt. Im pretty sure they will lose every game on this road trip. and is there a reason that POD has to play every single game? not like it matters though. and no lindsey in the lineup, but Russ Mitchell gets another start this time at first base.
Kuroda looks for his 11th win of the season going up against J.A. Happ. who has pitched very well since his trade to houston. The Dodgers are trying to snap a 6 game losing streak. Lindsey's First At Bat, Dodgers 6th Straight Loss

Stop the presses! In the bottom of the 8th inning, Broxton's Walkapalooza begins with a free pass to Bourgeois who is thrown out by A.J. Ellis while attempting to steal second! This is the first runner thrown out by a Dodger catcher since Russell Martin in July.
The first inning started out slightly better than normal when Jamey Carroll reached base on an error, and then Andre Ethier blasted a 2 run homerun off of Bud Norris. Ted Lilly took a shutout into the 6th inning when Chris Johnson shot a 3 run homer on a 3-2 count. The Dodgers once again left as many men on base as they could throughout the game. In the fifth inning Pod lead off with a double. Carroll struck out, Ethier walked, Loney struck out, and then of course the new guy Mitchell flies out to leave Pod stranded. I'm afraid the Dodger's total lack of offense has already rubbed off on the new guys. Lilly went 6 innings with 6 strikeouts, 2 walks, and 3 ERs. Johnson went 6 innings striking out 7, walking 4, and giving up 1 ER. In the seventh the Dodgers had another opportunity when Chacin came in to relieve Norris. Pod walked, Carroll singles, and Ethier walks to load the bases. Loney then hits a weak pop-up and Gibbons who is sent in to pinch-hit for Mitchell grounds out to end the inning. The 8th inning was the icing on this sad cake of a game. After Melancon walks Theriot he is called out on catcher interference by Blake who strikes out at the plate creating a inning ending double play. Just our luck. Kenley Jansen, who has been pitching very well, had a 1-2-3 8th inning with two strikeouts. Brandon Lyon then pitches a 1-2-3 ninth inning to pick up his 14th save.
John Lindsey finally had an at-bat in the 7th inning as a pinch hitter against Chacin. He flied out to center field. Hopefully he will get a start in this series.
In other news, I was very frightened when I read this:
Should Joe Torre return for a fourth season as Dodgers manager in 2011, he said on Thursday that a lot of work will have to be done in the offseason concerning the players' mind-set.
What this means is Torre may be thinking about returning next season *shudder*
The Dodgers now fall to 3 games below .500. Tomorrow Hiroki Kuroda takes the mound in game 2. See you this weekend, Go Blue:)
