Tigers 0 2 1
WP- Kershaw (7-3)
LP- Penny (5-6)
HR- Uribe (4)
In my first winning postgame summary since May 30th, I finally get a good one Dodger fans! Clayton Kershaw blows away the Tigers getting the complete game 2-hit shutout and strikes out 11. If that isn't amazing enough, our runs came off a very rare Uribe homerun, 3 base hits by James Loney, and a 2 RBI single by Kershaw himself.
Kershaw starts the game out strong by striking out Wells and Ordonez in the first and sets the Tigers down 1-2-3. Juan Uribe then hits a solo HR, his 4th of the season, to give the Dodgers a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Ethier then singles off Penny's foot, but Kemp's long fly out and Loney's groundball end the inning.
A Rare Uribe Homerun |
Kershaw whiffs another two by getting Cabrera and Peralta in the 2nd and the Tigers go down in order again. The Dodgers also go down in order in the bottom half of the inning.
The Tigers would get one of their only 2 hits in the third inning when Raburn doubles down the 3rd baseline. Navarro erases him by picking him off at third!
In the 4th, Wells singles, and that would be the end of the Tigers attempt to hit off Kershaw for the night.
In the 5th, Kershaw only allows a walk to Peralta, his only walk of the game.
In the 6th, Andre Ethier makes a nice sliding catch in foul territory to get Jackson out. Kersh then whiffs Wells to end the inning. The Dodgers score again in the bottom of the 6th when Loney leads off with a double, Navarro then doubles Loney home from second making it 2-0 Dodgers.
Wells Walks Back to the Dugout After Whiffing |
Kershaw strikes out Cabrera and the Tigers continue their ohfer brigade in the 7th. Schlereth comes in to relieve Penny in the bottom of the inning and walks Gordon who is then thrown out at 2nd trying to steal. Ethier angrily strikes out to end the inning.
Penny Twists His Knee on a Broken Bat Grounder |
Brad Penny goes 6 innings, allowing 7 hits, 2 runs, 3 walks, 4 strikeouts on 96 pitches.
Kershaw comes into shut down the Tigers again in the 8th as they go down in order. The Dodgers tack on some more runs in the bottom of the 8th when Kemp draws the walk, and Loney singles for this third hit of the game. Gwynn misses a bunt at the plate, and the catcher makes a throwing error as Kemp steals 3rd base and this also allows Loney to reach second. Gwynn whiffs. They intentionally walk Navarro to load the bases and bring in Benoit to pitch. Carroll hits into a force out and Kemp is out at home. Kershaw comes up and slaps the ball into right field allowing 2 runs to score, 4-0 Dodgers! That's Kershaw's 10th hit of the year! Gordon strikes out for the third time of the night to end the inning. Kersh comes in to pitch the 9th and just blows away the side striking out Santiago, Jackson, and Wells!
Kershaw goes 9 innings, allowing only 2 hits, 0 runs, 1 walk, striking out 11 on 112 pitches.
Kershaw Made the Tigers Look Like Kittens |
A now bearded Brad Penny once had a couple great seasons as a Dodger, but now Clayton Kershaw has taken his place as the Dodgers ace. Penny can still throw hard and he even hit 95-97 on the gun during the first couple innings, but youth prevailed tonight. The Tigers really had no chance against Kershaw tonight as he was on top of his game. This is his second complete game of the season, and he's really showing the baseball world what talent he possesses.
Chad Billingsley will try to break out his horrible slump tomorrow at 7:10pm. Usually Bills and Kersh have a little bit of friendly competition going on between each other, so maybe tonight's game will give Bills some momentum.
Great game Dodger fans!
